Upgrades to items allow players to boost an item's gear score up to 700, and then add an additional perk. Items can be upgraded if they're in your inventory and you decide to take them to the Kiln.
Certain items are worth upgrading due to their unique stats. (For instance, a perfectly broken point armor that is rolled can be used in melee PvP). Other items like weapons don't really change after an upgrade and aren't worth the effort.
Weapons
Weapons can be upgraded to increase their numeric stats such as damage to attack, crit chance PvE and PvP damage. Many weapons also come with a fixed bonus which is activated when three or more identical weapons are used in a group. The cost of upgrading a weapon's capabilities is contingent on the rarity of the weapon and its current level. For instance an item with a rating of +2 will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while a +3 requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade the weapon will continue to increase until it requires an upgrade to a higher level of Smithing Stones, at which point it will reset to one.
Upgrades to weapons can also reroll the stats of their base. While this is generally an excellent thing however, it could have negative consequences too. For items that only see use in a specific build (Whistant's shield for FB sorcs, for instance), upgrading them may render them unusable unless you happen to have an extremely lucky roll.
Armor items can also be upgraded to improve their performance. This can boost the defense of a helm or chest, while belts and gloves will increase their required strength and agility. Armor offers a rerolling option for its Enhanced Defense percent. This means that it is able to reduce its value.
The upgrade template of a weapon will display the new stats it will gain upon upgrading, along with the relative value of those stats. This means that a weapon will gain 3% attack damage if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. However the 3% does not mean that it will strike for 3 fewer times, since it is an absolute statistic.
Rerolling a weapon is possible by pressing the green button in the item menu using the circling arrows. This will roll an item and alter its stats, but not reset the weapon's levels, or connect it to an account's status.
Armor
A few upgrades to your armor can make a huge difference to your survivability. Certain sets can offer massive increases in resistance to poison, curses, fire, and magic. This makes it easier to traverse difficult areas. In general, the greater defense you have on your character, the greater health you can get from each point. Therefore, it's a good idea to upgrade your armor.
To upgrade your armor, go to any of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. There are four Great Fairy Fountains within the game and in order to unlock them all, you have to complete an additional quest involving the Stable Trotters. After you've completed your main quest and the associated fountains, you can talk to any Great Fairy in order to unlock the menu for upgrading armor.
Each piece of armor can be upgraded to three levels, and the amount of materials and Rupees required to complete each level will differ. You'll require anything from three Red Chuchu jellies and 10 Rupees to upgrade the initial armor piece, and between five Rubies or 10 Fire-Breath Horns to upgrade the next one. The Champion Leathers, for example can be upgraded to a +5 defense rating, which will allow you to stay ahead in cold environments with a large group of adversaries. Upgrades are a cost-effective alternative to purchasing a new trinket. It is possible to upgrade players for less than 12 tokens. The new trinket comes with the same base level as the old trinket, but will also have an additional bonus of 1% upgrade.
Once the old Trinkets are no longer usable, they can be upgraded. This allows players to increase both their power and value over time. They can be traded between players which makes them a good alternative to gold.
In general, players should upgrade their highest priority items first.
