Lamborghini, the Italian automobile manufacturer has taken the first step into non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The new project, which is dubbed the Space Key, is a piece that was developed in collaboration with a unknown artist. The unique NFT is a tangible item that connects to exclusive digital artwork that is accessible via a QR code on the back. The project is a limited edition and will be auctioned off within the next few weeks.
The Space Key is made from a carbon fiber composite material that Lamborghini smuggled to the International Space Station in 2019 as part of an investigation project. When it returned to earth the carbon fiber was transformed into this unique artwork. The physical object is inscribed with an NFT serial number that ties to the corresponding digital artwork via a QR code on the back.
NFTs for those not familiar are unique identifiers which are recorded on a distributed ledger of the blockchain and connected to a digital asset such as a photograph video, song, or any other type of record. This allows owners to ensure authenticity and scarcity as well as trackability of tokens through the internet.
Lamborghini is taking this unique approach to art by working with NFT PRO, a white label NFT solution for business. Over the next few weeks Lamborghini will reveal details about the exciting project including the name of the unidentified artist and a timeline for the auction.
The physical element of the Space Key. Space Key
Following multiple social media posts that tease some kind of space-themed item, Italian supercar maker Lamborghini has entered the world of tokens that aren't fungible (NFT) with a unique project called Space Key. The NFT was created in collaboration with a mysterious artist and will go on auction in just a few weeks. Its underlying structure is comprised of an advanced carbon fibre composite material, which was shipped to the International Space Station in 2019 as part of a research program. Carbon fiber was 3D-printed for the base of every Space Key. Each Space Key is linked to an exclusive, digital artwork by way of QR codes. Only five Space Keys were produced.
NFTs are unique identifications that are recorded in distributed ledgers, like the Blockchain, and connected to digital assets such as images. They're a hot topic for those with more money than So it was only a matter of time until an automaker decided to capitalize on the trend.
Space Key is made up of five units. It was created using a piece of carbon fiber composite that was delivered to the ISS back in 2019. Each NFT will be equipped with a QR code that links it to a special digital artwork created by the same artist. More details will be shared in the coming weeks and days, including the name of the artist along with the digital artwork and how to buy one of the five Space Keys.
The digital artwork
After weeks of social media posts hinting it, luxury automobile maker Lamborghini finally announced its first project for tokens that are non-fungible (NFT). The project was developed in collaboration with NFT PRO(tm) the "collector's item" is limited to five units and will soon be auctioned off.
At the heart of each Space Key is a block of carbon fire composite material that was shipped to the International Space Station in 2019 as part of a research project. After returning to Earth, the block was engraved with a QR codes that link to the digital element in the Space Key.
Each of the five Space Keys will feature a separate moment that occurs seconds apart as the Lamborghini Ultimae lifts off toward the stars. Each of five images was shot by photographer Fabian Oefner and contains over 600 million pixels.
Oefner used a balloon equipped with a camera that captured each of the individual shots, which were later merged into the final image. The result is a truly out of this world image that reveals the beauty of Earth as well as the futuristic, hyper-realistic image of the car erupting from it.
